The woman, second from left, is Ibtihaj Muhammad, vying to become the first woman on the US Fencing team to wear a hijab headscarf in the Olympics. You can find the full article here:

Oh, I so am… loved her last night!
Hey hey hey, Hope Solo is on Dancing With the Stars this season!! With Max I believe. He’ll be a good partner for her.
Hmm… can we get Alex Morgan her own comic book? Then all my worlds would intersect and my life would be complete. :)
She talked about that too during the game with the Fever announcers. She is going to go slow with taking care of it because she doesn’t want it to turn into something more serious before the 2012 Olympics, BUT she DID think she might still get in some WPS games this season still and would be attending the game this weekend with her WPS team for support!
OK, enough DC Depression, in sports news, US Soccer star Lauren Cheney was at the Indiana Fever game last night and got her own official Fever jersey and sat in on the televised broadcast with the announcers for a good portion of the second half, talking women’s soccer, basketball, women’s professional sports leagues and women’s sports in general. Great stuff.
And he’s not the only sportswriter (and all men I should note) I’ve heard this from the last few days…
Longtime sports pundit Bryant Gumbel thinks that the U.S. Women are being “coddled” in a “patronizing” way that their male counterparts would never experience. This week the host of HBO’s Real Sports noted that a top-level men’s team which fumbled away glory in a similar scenario would be roundly criticized and harshly analyzed, whereas the USWNT has essentially been praised for “a nice try.”
Which is really a crock of shit all around.
First, a men’s team would have been hyped WAY more in the media BEFOREHAND, not just come along at the last second.
Secondly, this WAS the Finals game IN OVERTIME, IN PENALTY KICKS. You can’t come ANY CLOSER and NOT WIN! It’s not like a massive failure which I’m sure Germany should have much more of a choke label than the USWNT, judging by expectations vs. results.
Lastly, the notion that a men’s team in a similar scenario would be harshly analyzed, I need only point back to the year the 16-0 New England Patriots lost the Super Bowl to the 10-6 New York Giants on a field goal in the last minute. (The professional football equivalent of losing on penalty kicks essentially.) No one called for the firing of Bill Belichek, the coach, OR a massive overhaul of the team afterwards.
Sure THIS YEAR, the Miami Heat took a TON of criticism for “Choking” in the NBA Finals against the Mavericks. But that was because they were a divided team of individualistic big mouth unlikable braggarts that finally got their comeuppance, not because they were MEN! (They were hardly “men”.)
