Australians Molly Taylor and Rebecca Smart are the only full-time all-female team in this year’s 2011 World Rally Championship. (Molly on the left, Rebecca on the right).
They are part of the WRC Academy program where young drivers are given a chance to compete in six rallies in the WRC in identical Ford Focus R2s without having to come up with the funding to cover the expenses of the cars, mechanics, etc.
Erika Detota, the 2010 2WD US Rally Car Champion, driving her “I Heart Boobies” Rally car. If you look at all the mud and dings and dents on this car, you can get an idea of what Rally Car driving is like!
This is Erika Detota, US Rally car driver. In her FIRST season in a rally car in 2010, she became the first woman to win a US Rally Championship, the 2WD US Rally Championship, driving her “I Heart Boobies” car. Her sponsor is the Keep-A-Breast organization, a non-profit organization devoted to educating young women on breast cancer awareness.
The Keep A Breast Foundation™ is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization who’s mission is to help eradicate breast cancer by exposing young people to methods of prevention, early detection and support. Through art events, educational programs and fundraising efforts, we seek to increase breast cancer awareness among young people so they are better equipped to make choices and develop habits that will benefit their long-term health and well-being.
Charaign Sesock, a spokeswoman for The American Cancer Society states: “The “I Love Boobies!” campaign is targeting teen years and college ages so that they can empower themselves to be advocates for their own bodies. If you can start raising awareness early on, it will only benefit them as they grow older.”
If you want to see how tough it is to be a pro rally driver, try this ridealong with rally driver Emma Gilmour and her co-driver Claire Mole. This is a rally stage in Finland, known for it’s narrow dirt roads with unforgiving trees lining each side and huge jumps (check out at 3:37), all driven at a high rate of speed.
Any time you think your commute is bad, take a view of this!
Another photo of New Zealand Rally driver Emma Gilmour and her Subaru Rally car.
Last year, Emma competed in the World Rally Championship leg in New Zealand and finished in 2nd place on the podium in the Production WRC category.
Natasha Chang, Jamaican Rally Driver (and also model and Jamaican TV star), nicknamed “the Danica Patrick of Jamaica”. :)
Burcu Cetinkaya, Turkey’s top female rally driver.
Ramona Karlsson, the driver for Europe’s top all-female rally team.
(A rally team consists of the driver, who does the actual driving, and the co-driver, who calls out directions from a map route prepared before hand… “Slight right 4, 60 meters, straight 100 meters, hairpin 6…”)
I realized today that I hadn’t covered one of my favorite sports yet on this tumblr. And my favorite racing sport of all, rally racing. Where you take a slightly modified street car and race it on all kinds of wild off-road conditions.
Women have been driving rally cars since the 1970s.
