Half a world away from me, of course, it’s just starting to head into summertime. Here’s some action from Australia’s Women’s National Cricket League.
Australian cricket player Betty Wilson, who passed away in January, 2010.
Betty was the first cricket player ever, male or female, to score both a century and take 10 wickets in a Test match. She started playing cricket when she was 14, devoted her whole life to cricket (After a fiance dumped her once because she wouldn’t stop playing, she said, “I guess I’m married to cricket.”) and was never paid for a single match.
She was the first female cricketer named to the Australian Sports Hall of Fame and her name adorns the trophy for the national Under-21 female Championships.
During the Finals of the NatWest Quadrangular series against Australia, England’s Isa Guha (celebrated on my tumblr previously as being one of THE hottest women in sports) took her 100th wicket!
In the four-team cricket tournament being held between England, Australia, New Zealand and India, England defeated Australia by 34 runs in the Finals to win the tournament. Here they are celebrating their win.
England also won their cricket match against New Zealand, but it seems their celebration was a little more enthusiastic than Australia’s :)
Danielle Wyatt and Sarah Taylor hugging it out.
Speaking of cricket, there is a quadrangluar tournament going on right now between Australia, India, England and New Zealand.
Here is Clea Smith congratulating Sarah Coyte for hitting the winnings runs off the final ball of the match against India in Australia’s nail biting win.
One reason to love cricket, England’s Isa Guha…
I find it amusing that it’s easier for me to explain and get people to understand why I enjoy seeing Tim Drake in dresses than it is for me to explain and get people to understand why I love cricket. :)
I know I’m guilty of being a bit USA-centric in my sports news, so to counter-balance, always good to have some cricket (a sport I LOVE)…
Laura Marsh of England against Australia
Maybe the women of Australia will save some national face against the English sides in cricket. Leah Poulton of Australia driving through the off side here. Lord knows the men have fallen apart for Australia!
She just got “bowled” (kind of like striking out in softball).
