One of MY students performing Seiuchin kata at our semi-annual tournament and competition. Aside from just posting pictures of strong, confident, capable women, I love the idea of being able to maybe just help shape a few for the future myself. :)

Sure, the season is only two games in so far, but at least briefly, Appalachian State senior Anna Freeman (center) is leading the entire country in scoring. She’s backed up by Courtney Freeman (right, no relation) and Maryah Sydnor (left).

Congrats to Stacy Lewis for winning the LPGA Player of the Year award for 2012, the first American to win the award since Beth Daniel in 1994. Diagnosed with scoliosis at age 11, she was in a back brace until after high school when she had five screws put in her spine to fix things up.
Those kinds of stories are how you become role models in sports.

Sure, the NHL is on strike (AGAIN!), but that doesn’t mean you can’t watch hockey this fall and winter!

Sure, there have been female athletes in video games before. IF you play tennis or golf or Olympics video games. But this year, EA Sports “NHL 13”, has the first female playable real life athletes in a hockey game (and probably the first pro team sports video game, but I haven’t been able to confirm that yet).
The two included players are Angela Ruggiero of Team USA fame and Hayley Wickenheiser, long time leader of Team Canada. AND they are captains to two All-Star teams (all the other players on the teams are current male NHL stars) named Team Ruggiero and Team Wickenheiser.
I played Team Ruggiero against the Nashville Predators and Angela had some wicked shots, one especially when she drifted in over the blue line to unleash a wicked slap shot that Pekka Rinne just got his glove on. That’s her above taking a shot in the video game.
This all started in NHL 12 actually, when after NHL 11 with it’s Create-A-Pro mode was included, a 14 year old girl from Buffalo, NY, Lexi Peters, wrote in to complain that she an fellow members of her Purple Eagles hockey team, could not create versions of themselves and had to settle for using male player models with long “hockey hair”. :) That letter reached the desk of David Pittman. lead producer on NHL 12, who included the option of being able to create male OR female hockey players in NHL 12.
As a bonus, the default player face for the female player turned out to be Lexi herself. :)
But all that led to this year’s playable characters of Wickenheiser and Ruggiero.

This is Wisconsin-Green Bay’s star player, Julie Wojta. Her team finished 30-1 this season but only got a #7 seed in the tournament and will have to play Iowa State for the second time in the last three tournaments on the Cyclones home court in Ames, Iowa.
They’ll have their work cut out for them!

Back in basketball after turning down the offer to play for Connecticut and taking some time off to play volleyball for Deleware, Elena Delle Donne yesterday led the Delaware Blue Hens to their first ever CAA Championship. The Blue Hens also set a record this year for wins with 27, and cracked the Top 25 national ranking for the first time ever.

Ronda Rousey, Olympic medalist for judo, now the hottest thing on the women’s MMA circuit. She improved her record to 5-0 this last weekend, winning the Strikeforce Bantamweight Championship title, defeating Miesha Tate in the first round.
Not one of her five wins so far has lastest longer than the first round.
