I don’t really have anything against Caitlin Fairchild as a character. I kinda like that she is really supposed to be a nerd who can kind of hulk out when she needs to, which of us nerds doesn’t have that fantasy?

It’s just that, of all the Gen-13 women to make it into the New 52, I thought she was the least interesting of the three compared to Rainmaker and Roxy.

Starting from the most recent and heading backwards, here are what GRRRL Camp feels were some of the most empowering moments for girls in 2012.

1. The US Soccer Federation announced a new women’s professional league!

2. We elected a record number of women to the 113th Congress of the United States!

3. We celebrated the United Nations’ first International Day of the Girl! This special day is about highlighting, celebrating, discussing, and advancing girls’ lives and opportunities across the globe.

4. We celebrated the first ever Malala Day, in honor of the brave Pakistani girl who was shot in the head because she advocates for girls’ education.

5. Sam Gordon, 9, turned heads in an all-boy pee-wee football league after scoring 35 touchdowns and running 1,911 yards in one year. Check out her highlight reel!

6. Gabrielle Douglas became the first African American to win the gold medal in the individual gymnastics all-around competition!

7. A 15 year old Palestinian girl, Bashaer Othman, took office as the mayor of a West Bank town, becoming the youngest person ever to hold the position.

8. Brave came out, proving to be the most empowering girl-centered Pixar movie we’ve ever seen! Of course, awesome Halloween costumes followed the movie’s release.

9. Katherine Legge brought the first all-female team to the Indy 500!

10. Elena Myers, 19, became the first woman ever to win a professional race at Daytona!

What a year for girls! What a great new list of role models! Can’t wait to see what 2013 brings.

My daughter Anya loves comics and really wanted to be The Huntress for Halloween. Since we couldn’t make a costume for her and leave her sister out, we decided to recreate the current “World’s Finest” team.

It was their (and my) first attempt at cosplaying anything, but I think it worked out pretty well. If the girls are still interested, we will do it again next year — but it has to be their idea. I don’t want to turn into the nerd version of a “Toddlers and Tiaras” parent.

This is like one of those things I’m afraid to even say out loud because I’m worried someone at DC will notice but…

How and or why does JH Williams III get special dispensation to keep Batwoman out of all those continuity disrupting, story-telling interrupting crossover “events” that DC has been so fond of since the reboot began. No Court of the Owls (THANK YOU!), no Death of the Family (THANK YOU INFINITY!) and instead gets to carry on with an awesome Wonder Woman-Batwoman team up that only makes me wish he was doing Wonder Woman’s book as well.

FUSE is an upcoming video game from Electronic Arts, another in a long line of four player cooperative shooter games that tries to find a gimmick to stand out from the crowd. I won’t go into that gimmick here, since that’s not what interests me about the game, but rather, that, for the first time that I can recall, the four member team is equally split between male and female characters, instead of having the one lone woman (to go with the usual one black male character). Think Borderlands, Borderlands 2, Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Dead Island, ad infintum (until now!).

And for you Commander Shepard/Liara T’soni shippers, I should note that Naya (right) is voiced by Jennifer Hale and Izzy (left) is voiced by Ali Hillis.

One benefit to the Avengers movie (more than Iron Man 2 did for it) was the big push it gave (seemingly) to the Black Widow in the comics line. It seems I see her in almost EVERY Marvel book these days!

Great story in today’s USA Today (12/5/2012) about Gabrielle Ludwig, a 50 year old transsexual basketball player who is realizing her dream to play college basketball after a 30 year hiatus.

Accepted and backed by her coach, her team and her school, I like the quote from teammate Felicia Anderson best, “We’ve been discriminated against for different reasons. We all have our own oppressions we are facing ourselves. Either we are lesbians or we dress like boys or we have piercings or tattoos or different hairstyles. All of us are different, so it’s like, where else would she be?”
