Why I love Ms. Marvel
(art by Tom Burgos)
I had been thinking about writing this up since I had done one for Huntress something that turned into one for Power Girl, so I had to do a Ms. Marvel one sooner or later. And since her vote is tomorrow, NOW is the time to do it, I guess.
Keep in mind I’m writing right before bed so it probably won’t come out the way I want it to.
Due to my advanced (and as yet undisclosed LOL) age, I was there when Ms. Marvel first came out. And for Honey West and Batgirl and April Dancer, the Girl from U.N.C.L.E. and She-Hulk and The Cat (Patsy Walker who later turned into Hellcat). It was a great and cool time to see all these female heroes emerging and getting their due.
Right from the start, she was kicking ass probably the most of all. In the beginning, she had kind of a split personality (even more than She-Hulk) where Ms. Marvel didn’t take no shit. But then at some point Carol Danvers realized she was everything Ms. Marvel was anyway and they ended the split personality thing and she was still kicking ass. And she got what is STILL her current costume in the late 70s and it was SO FAR AHEAD OF ITS TIME, that it still looks awesome TODAY!
Now if I love Huntress for what she is and I love Power Girl for who she’s become, I kinda love Ms. Marvel for what I feel she COULD be or always almost is. Seriously, in my mind, I always see that Carol Danvers, Ms. Marvel could be the Superman of the Marvel universe. She could be the hero that defines and sets the bar for all the other heroes. (Maybe she’s not but that’s always how I see her anyway.)
Now I was out of comics for a bit and way out of Marvel for awhile, so I never read the whole House of M thing (should I?? Please let me know about this!), but I take it from the start of her own series afterwards, that she actually WAS that type of character in the House of M universe?
Anyway, starting with her own series and me getting back hardcore into comics, I loved the whole “Best of the Best” thing and the whole road of those 50 issues that led her from trying to be the best of the best to being the best Carol Danvers. I’ve seen a lot of people who didn’t like Brian Reed’s work on Ms. Marvel, but I’m not one of them. I saw her as a powerhouse, as a mentor, as a leader, as a bad ass, as a superspy, as someone trying to go back to her roots that had been taken away from her (amongst other things that had been taken from her) and throughout it all, she was always someone I could admire and look up to.
Combined with all her early issues I had read, plus reading all 50 issues of her current title and feeling bad that she still can’t carry her own book in today’s market, I’m always going to be rooting for her to BE that BEST she can be. Because I really think it would take her full circle back to being what she originally set out to be, best of the best.
When I write Ms. Marvel, that’s always how I am going to write her, as if she WAS the baddest of the bads and the goodest of the goods, because that’s what I want her to become. :) I always feel like it’s just around the corner!
